The thinking

This route uses four bases, each for at least two nights, and limits internal flights to Lima to Cusco and Arequipa to Lima. It starts gently in Lima, then gives you time to acclimatise in Cusco before moving into the lower Sacred Valley. Machu Picchu is included as a full-day excursion from Ollantaytambo rather than an overnight stop, keeping the trip within 13 nights and avoiding a one-night base. Arequipa adds a very different southern Peru atmosphere, colonial streets, local food and the Colca highlands. The 13/06/2027 overnight bus to Arequipa is a practical exception to the two-night-base rule because it avoids an unnecessary Lima return and protects daytime sightseeing. Flights, rail schedules, entry circuits and prices for 05/2027 are confirmation_required because operators have not yet published them.

Best fit for your budget

A$10,000 is a comfortable planning ceiling for one person if you use mid-range locally run hotels, book international flights when fares are released, take an overnight premium bus from Cusco to Arequipa, and choose a small-group Colca trip rather than private touring. The budget below is a planning estimate, not a quote.

Solo female traveller approach

Stay in central, staffed accommodation in Barranco or Miraflores, Cusco historic centre, Ollantaytambo town and central Arequipa. Use hotel-arranged or official airport transport for late arrivals, avoid isolated walking routes after dark, and use licensed taxis or app-based rides where available. For hikes and remote viewpoints, go with a reputable licensed guide or small group.

Altitude matters

Cusco is about 3,400 m above sea level and can affect anyone. Keep Day 3 light, hydrate, avoid heavy drinking on arrival, and discuss prevention medicines with your doctor before departure. Descending to the Sacred Valley after Cusco can help, but it is not a substitute for acclimatisation.

Chapter 01 · 2 nights · from Day 1

Lima

Arrive into Jorge Chávez International Airport and settle into Barranco or Miraflores. Day 1 has no fixed touring. Use Day 2 for Barranco's street art and cliffside paths, Mercado de Surquillo or a local food walk, then the Malecón viewpoints around Parque del Amor and Parque Bicentenario. Keep one half-day loose for weather, jet lag or a slow café morning.

  1. 01

    Lima arrival and Barranco recovery

Use a pre-arranged hotel transfer or the airport-authorised transport desk. Keep passport, phone, cards and valuables in your day bag, not in vehicle luggage.

  2. 02

Barranco, Miraflores and Lima food culture

Walk Barranco in the morning: Parque Municipal, Puente de los Suspiros and Bajada de Baños. Stay on well-used streets and use a licensed taxi or app-based ride rather than walking between districts after dark.

Signature place

Puente de los Suspiros

Barranco's wooden bridge and ravine walk are a short, low-effort introduction to Lima after arrival.

Signature place

Mercado N.º 1 de Surquillo

A working market for fruit, herbs, chillies and everyday Lima food culture rather than a staged food attraction.

Signature place

Parque del Amor

A clifftop Miraflores lookout over the Pacific, best paired with a daylight Malecón walk.

Signature place

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima

A concise contemporary-art stop near Barranco if its current exhibition programme suits your interests.

Day 1

Lima arrival and Barranco recovery

  • afternoonUse a pre-arranged hotel transfer or the airport-authorised transport desk. Keep passport, phone, cards and valuables in your day bag, not in vehicle luggage.LinkMap
  • afternoonCheck in, shower and rest. Ask reception whether they can accept a courier bag before your next stay, but do not rely on it until they confirm in writing.
  • eveningIf you feel well, take a short, daylight-only walk around Parque Municipal de Barranco and the Puente de los Suspiros. It is a gentle first look at Barranco without committing to a tour.Map
  • eveningBuy bottled water and simple snacks nearby, then have an early night. Lima is at sea level, but the next base is Cusco at high altitude, so start hydrating and keep alcohol light.Map

Arrive at Lima Jorge Chávez International Airport, then use a hotel-arranged transfer or airport-authorised taxi to Barranco or Miraflores. Allow roughly 45 to 90 minutes in traffic. No fixed touring today.

DinnerIsolina, Peruvian criollo, mid to highrestaurant

A Barranco choice for a first proper meal, with classic Peruvian home-style dishes in a setting that is easy to reach from the suggested base.

Reserve directly through the official website or ask the hotel to assist; confirm 05/2027 service details before booking.

  • OrCanta Rana, Peruvian seafood and criollo, mid. A casual Barranco seafood institution if you arrive early enough and want an unfussy local meal.
  • OrLa Lucha Sanguchería Criolla, Peruvian sandwiches, low. Useful for a quick, lower-cost first meal if jet lag wins over a long dinner.
Key decision

Keep Day 1 deliberately open

Lima traffic, a long international journey and any baggage delay can change the day. A short Barranco stroll is optional, but do not prepay for a tour or make a hard-to-reach dinner booking.

Day 2

Barranco, Miraflores and Lima food culture

  • morningWalk Barranco in the morning: Parque Municipal, Puente de los Suspiros and Bajada de Baños. Stay on well-used streets and use a licensed taxi or app-based ride rather than walking between districts after dark.Map

  • afternoonHave lunch at Mercado N.º 1 de Surquillo, then browse the produce stalls. Go with only what you need, keep your phone away when not in use, and ask before photographing vendors.Map
  • afternoonContinue to Miraflores for Parque del Amor and the Malecón cliffs. Walk north towards Parque Bicentenario only while there is good daylight, then take a registered taxi or app-based ride back to Barranco.Map
  • eveningKeep the evening flexible for packing and an early night before the Cusco flight. Confirm airport pickup with the hotel and allow a generous Lima traffic buffer tomorrow.LinkMap

DinnerAl Toke Pez, Peruvian seafood, low to midcasual restaurant

A compact Surquillo seafood lunch that suits the market stop and gives a more everyday counter-service experience than Lima's formal tasting restaurants.

Walk in early; confirm current service arrangements directly before relying on it.

  • OrPanchita, Peruvian criollo, mid to high. A polished Miraflores choice for classic Peruvian dishes if you prefer a seated lunch or dinner with booking options.
  • OrEl Chinito, Peruvian sandwiches, low. A lower-cost, quick sandwich option for a relaxed food-focused day.
Key decision

Choose the coastline walk length by weather and energy

The Malecón is best in clear or partly clear conditions, but Lima can be overcast in May. If the clifftop view is muted or you are tired, spend longer in Barranco and Surquillo rather than forcing a long walk.

Fly to Cusco and take the first afternoon slowly. On Day 4, explore Plaza de Armas, Qorikancha and the narrow streets of San Blas at an easy pace. Day 5 is for Sacsayhuamán and the quieter high viewpoints around Qenqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay with a guide or small group. Keep the latter half of Day 4 uncommitted and avoid a demanding hike until you know how you feel at altitude.

  1. 03

Fly to Cusco and settle in gently

Signature place

Qorikancha

Key decision

Use the tourist ticket only if it fits your next two days

  • OrLimo, Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei, higher. A more polished Plaza de Armas choice if you want a special final Cusco dinner.
Key decision

Choose a half-day outing if altitude is still affecting you

  • OrChuncho, Peruvian contemporary, higher. Choose this for a more polished final-night meal in Ollantaytambo.
Key decision

Treat Pinkuylluna as optional, not essential

It offers one of the best quieter views over Ollantaytambo, but it is steep and conditions can change. The main ruins and town streets still give a strong Inca landscape day if access is closed or you do not feel fully acclimatised.

    Decide by confirmation_required

  • Australian travel advice and entry requirements

Check Smartraveller before booking and again shortly before departure. Confirm passport validity, Peru entry conditions, transit-country requirements and travel-insurance cover directly with relevant authorities and airlines.

    Decide by 01/02/2027

  • Altitude and remote-road flexibility

Cusco and the Colca route are high altitude. Keep the first Cusco afternoon and at least one Arequipa half-day free. Road conditions, strikes, weather and rail disruption can affect Andes travel, so use cancellable accommodation where practical and do not schedule a tight international connection after the Arequipa to Lima flight.

    Decide by 01/05/2027

  • May weather and packing

May is generally part of the drier season in the southern Andes, but temperatures can drop sharply after dark and weather remains variable. Pack layers, a warm insulated layer, rain protection, sun protection, sturdy shoes and a daypack. Check short-range forecasts closer to each base.

    Decide by 14/05/2027

  • Solo safety and local transport

Use registered operators, keep a hotel card or offline map, avoid displaying valuables, and ask accommodation staff which routes are sensible after dark. For remote viewpoints, do not hike alone without current local advice and an appropriate guide.
