The thinking

The original 14-stop request cannot fit the required maximum of eight bases with at least three nights each. This route keeps Singapore, Rome, Puglia, Bologna, the south of France and Basque Country, Spain, Marrakech, Barcelona and Istanbul by combining nearby stops into practical multi-centre bases. It has 43 nights on the ground, preserves recovery time after long flights, and uses rail where it is strongest, with flights for the long cross-Mediterranean sectors.

Route change needed

Biarritz is included as a day trip or one-way stop from the San Sebastián base rather than a one-night hotel change. Marseille is absorbed into a Provence base, and Madrid is a stop within the Andalucía and Madrid base. This is necessary to stay at eight bases and a minimum of three nights per base.

2027 fares and schedules

Most August to October 2027 flight and rail schedules, fares and sales dates are not published yet. All future transport costs below are planning allowances only and need confirmation when operators open sales.

Season and heat

Late August and September can be very hot in Singapore, Rome, Puglia, Seville and Marrakech. Plan early starts, a long lunch break and one uncommitted half-day at every base.

Chapter 01 · 5 nights · from Day 1

Singapore新加坡

Begin with five nights in one central 4-star hotel around City Hall, Marina Bay or Tanjong Pagar. Day 1 is only the airport transfer and settling in. Keep one later afternoon open for the heat, pool time or a hawker-centre return visit.

  1. 01

    Singapore arrival and reset

Clear immigration, collect bags and use the official airport transport options. A taxi is simplest after an overnight flight; MRT is practical if you arrive light and the room is ready.

  2. 02

Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay

Start at Gardens by the Bay. Walk through the outdoor gardens first, then decide on cooled conservatories if the weather is oppressive. Pre-book only if the official site has released timed admission for your date.

Signature place

Gardens by the Bay

Outdoor waterfront gardens, cooled conservatories and Supertree Grove. Best used flexibly around late-August heat and rain.

Signature place

National Gallery Singapore

Singapore and Southeast Asian art in the former City Hall and Supreme Court buildings, with useful air-conditioning in the middle of the day.

Signature place

Singapore Botanic Gardens

UNESCO-listed tropical gardens, best visited early before the strongest heat.

Signature place

Kampong Gelam

Historic Malay-Arab quarter around Sultan Mosque, Arab Street and Haji Lane.

Signature place

Food centres, temples and shophouse streets that work well in the cooler part of the day.

Day 1

Singapore arrival and reset

  • afternoonClear immigration, collect bags and use the official airport transport options. A taxi is simplest after an overnight flight; MRT is practical if you arrive light and the room is ready.LinkMap
  • afternoonLeave luggage with the hotel if the room is not ready, shower if early check-in is offered, then keep the afternoon deliberately quiet.Map
  • eveningWalk the sheltered City Hall to Marina Bay route at an easy pace: CHIJMES, St Andrew's Cathedral exterior and the waterfront near The Fullerton Bay.LinkMap

Arrive at Singapore Changi Airport from Sydney on the business-class sector. No fixed tour. Take MRT, taxi or hotel-arranged transfer to City Hall; allow about 25 to 50 minutes door to door depending on terminal, traffic and hotel.

DinnerLau Pa Sat, Singapore hawker food, $hawker centre

Close enough to City Hall by taxi or MRT, broad choice for a low-pressure first meal, and easy to leave early if jet lag catches up.

Walk in; choose a stall after checking current trading status.

  • OrAdam Road Food Centre, Malay and Singapore hawker food, $. Useful if staying nearer the Botanic Gardens or arriving too tired for a central waterfront walk.
Key decision

Choose recovery over a packed first day

Singapore's heat and humidity, plus the Sydney to Singapore flight, make a simple transfer, short walk and early dinner more useful than a timed attraction.

Key decision

Whether to enter both conservatories

The conservatories are a strong heat and rain fallback, but both can feel repetitive after a long flight. Choose one or both according to energy, weather and the official ticket conditions.

  • OrGreat World Food Junction, Singapore and Asian casual food, $. An air-conditioned fallback near Robertson Quay if a thunderstorm makes outdoor river plans unappealing.
Key decision

Keep the final evening close to the hotel

Day 6 is a long flight to Rome. A local dinner, early packing and an unhurried sleep are better protection against a difficult transfer than adding another cross-city attraction.

This is the waterfront alternative for travellers who place more value on sea views and a quieter evening setting. It remains within walking distance of Bari Vecchia, but is less convenient than the preferred hotel for the station, so taxis are sensible with luggage and for early trains.

Confirm the exact room outlook, air-conditioning, pool operating period, taxi access and pre-arrival luggage policy direct with the hotel. Late-August 2027 availability and rates are not yet published.

Chapter 04 · 4 nights · from Day 14

BolognaBologna

Four nights around Bologna Centrale or the historic centre creates a relaxed food-focused base. It can absorb a Modena and Parma outing without another hotel move, while retaining an uncommitted half-day under the porticoes.

  1. 14

    Bari to Bologna transfer

Hand main luggage to the Bari hotel reception before departure only if it accepts a same-day collection. The preferred plan is to take luggage on the direct train because the next base is reached the same day.

  2. 15

    Bologna market lanes and porticoes

Start at Mercato delle Erbe on Via Ugo Bassi for coffee, produce stalls and a practical look at everyday Bologna food shopping. Check individual traders and any holiday closures on the day.

Bari to Bologna transfer

  • morningHand main luggage to the Bari hotel reception before departure only if it accepts a same-day collection. The preferred plan is to take luggage on the direct train because the next base is reached the same day.LinkMap
  • morningTravel Bari Centrale to Bologna Centrale on a reserved Frecce or Italo service. Allow time at each end for luggage and platform changes.LinkMap
  • afternoonTake a taxi from Bologna Centrale to Savhotel Aemilia, around 15 minutes depending on traffic, then check in and rest.Map
  • eveningIf energy permits, have an easy first walk under the porticoes around Via San Vitale and Strada Maggiore rather than attempting a major sight.Map

Take the booked high-speed train from Bari Centrale to Bologna Centrale, about 6 to 7.5 hours station to station. From Bologna Centrale, Savhotel Aemilia is about 15 minutes by taxi; leave this day free after check-in.

DinnerTrattoria Anna Maria, Bolognese, mid-rangesit-down trattoria

A classic central choice for tagliatelle al ragù and other local dishes, suitable for the first evening without adding a long journey after the train.

Reserve directly by phone or ask the hotel concierge to confirm current booking arrangements.

Map

  • OrOsteria dell'Orsa, Bolognese, budget. Simple, central and useful for a lower-cost pasta dinner if you prefer not to reserve.
  • OrRistorante I Portici, Italian fine dining, splurge. A more formal option close to Bologna Centrale for a special first-night meal; confirm current opening days and reservations directly.
Key decision

Carry luggage on the Bari to Bologna train

This is a same-day direct rail move, so forwarding bags adds handling risk without much benefit. Use a taxi at Bologna rather than walking from the station with suitcases.

Day 15

Bologna market lanes and porticoes

  • morningStart at Mercato delle Erbe on Via Ugo Bassi for coffee, produce stalls and a practical look at everyday Bologna food shopping. Check individual traders and any holiday closures on the day.LinkMap
  • morningWalk through the Quadrilatero food lanes between Piazza Maggiore and Via Clavature. Stop at Salumeria Bruno e Franco for cured meats, cheese and pantry goods rather than trying to fit in a full lunch.Map
  • afternoonSee Piazza Maggiore, Basilica di San Petronio and the Archiginnasio, all within roughly 10 minutes' walk of the market lanes. The Archiginnasio has the Teatro Anatomico and historic library spaces; check access conditions before going in.LinkMap
  • afternoonUse the UNESCO-listed porticoes for an unhurried late-afternoon walk from Piazza Santo Stefano along Strada Maggiore. This is the right pace for the warm late-August period and allows a hotel break if needed.Map

DinnerSfoglia Rina, Fresh pasta and Bolognese, mid-rangecasual pasta restaurant

It is central to the Quadrilatero and makes sense after a market-focused day, with fresh pasta as the main event rather than a lengthy formal dinner.

Walk in early or confirm current booking and queue arrangements directly.

  • OrMo Mortadella Lab, Bolognese sandwiches, budget. A quick, lower-cost option for mortadella sandwiches near the central market area.
  • OrAhimè, Contemporary Italian, splurge. Choose this for a more inventive dinner away from the traditional trattoria format; confirm current opening nights and reservations directly.
Key decision

Keep the first full day within the historic centre

Bologna is best understood on foot through its food lanes and porticoes. Saving Modena for a separate day avoids rushing market browsing and museum stops.

Day 16

Modena food and heritage day trip

  • morningTake a regional or high-speed train from Bologna Centrale to Modena. The rail trip is commonly around 20 to 35 minutes, but confirm the 2027 timetable and platform before leaving.LinkMap
  • morningWalk about 15 minutes from Modena station to Mercato Albinelli, a covered market on Via Luigi Albinelli, for regional produce, Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic vinegar and lunch ingredients. Check individual trader hours before relying on it.LinkMap
  • afternoonVisit Modena Cathedral, Piazza Grande and the Ghirlandina tower area. The cathedral and piazza form the UNESCO World Heritage site; allow time to view the exterior even if interior access is restricted for worship or events.Map
  • afternoonChoose one specialist visit: Casa Museo Enzo Ferrari for automotive history, about 15 minutes' walk from the station, or a booked balsamic-vinegar producer visit outside the centre with return transport confirmed in advance.Map
  • eveningReturn to Bologna before dinner, allowing at least 30 minutes station-to-station plus time to reach the hotel.LinkMap

DinnerTrattoria Aldina, Traditional Modenese, mid-rangetraditional trattoria

A Modena lunch is the most sensible way to try local dishes such as tortellini and regional cured meats before returning to Bologna.

Reserve directly before the day trip, as this is a small lunch-focused restaurant and availability is limited.

Map

  • OrMercato Albinelli food counters, Emilian market food, budget. A flexible and lower-cost option if you want to graze among market stalls rather than commit to a long lunch.
  • OrOsteria Francescana, Contemporary Italian, splurge. A destination dinner option in Modena, but it requires advance planning and a late return to Bologna. Check official availability, menu format and cancellation terms before committing.
Key decision

Choose Ferrari museum or balsamic producer, not both

Both are worthwhile but use different parts of the day. The Ferrari museum is easy without a car; a producer visit needs confirmed transport and should be selected only if food production is the priority.

Day 17

San Luca portico and a free Bologna afternoon

  • morningTake a taxi or local bus to Porta Saragozza, then walk the Portico di San Luca towards Santuario della Madonna di San Luca. The full covered route is about 3.8 km uphill, with 666 arches, so allow around 1.5 to 2 hours at a gentle pace.Map
  • morningVisit the sanctuary and take in the city view if weather is clear. Check current church access and service times before entering, and use a taxi or bus back if the descent is uncomfortable.LinkMap
  • afternoonHave a simple lunch back in the centre, then leave the afternoon intentionally open for laundry, a hotel rest, shopping for edible gifts, or a return to a favourite market lane.Map
  • afternoonFor an optional final cultural stop, visit MAMbo, the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, about 15 minutes on foot from Bologna Centrale. Check exhibitions and ticket arrangements before going.Map
  • eveningPack for tomorrow's flight transfer. Keep passports, medicines, a change of clothes and valuables in cabin baggage, and reconfirm flight check-in requirements.LinkMap

DinnerOsteria Broccaindosso, Traditional Bolognese, mid-rangetraditional trattoria

A relaxed final Bologna dinner in the Santo Stefano area, suited to trying a classic Bolognese menu without the formality of a tasting restaurant.

Reserve directly or ask the hotel to reserve after current service days are confirmed.

Map

  • OrForno Brisa, Bakery and pizza, budget. Useful for a quick, cheaper dinner or picnic-style meal when you want an early packing night.
  • OrI Portici Restaurant, Italian fine dining, splurge. Choose this for a special last evening, close to the station area; confirm current opening schedule, menu and reservation terms directly.
Key decision

Walk up to San Luca only if the heat is manageable

Late August can be hot and humid. Start early, carry water and use public transport or a taxi if the uphill portico walk would undermine the rest of the day.

Chapter 05 · 6 nights · from Day 18

Provence and Basque CoastMarseille et Pays Basque

Six nights split only as a single planning base concept: use Marseille for the first three nights and San Sebastián for the following three nights if hotel changes become acceptable, or choose rail-connected stays after ticket timings are confirmed. The original Marseille, Biarritz and San Sebastián sequence is geographically awkward and requires a long rail day or a flight. Biarritz is best visited from San Sebastián by local bus or car transfer rather than as a separate one-night base.

  1. 18

    Bologna to Marseille transfer

Key decision

Keep Day 18 clear after the flight

The Bologna to Marseille sector is connection-dependent. A fixed museum visit or dinner reservation would add avoidable pressure if the flight arrives late.

  • France to Spain sequencing

Marseille to San Sebastián is the least efficient land sector. A flight to Bilbao with a coach onward is recommended, with Biarritz visited as a day trip from San Sebastián. Confirm exact flight days before locking hotels.

  • Hotel split within combined bases

The eight-base cap requires regional consolidation, but Marseille and San Sebastián, Madrid and Seville, and Barcelona and Istanbul cannot realistically be single hotels. Treat the named combined bases as route chapters and confirm hotel splits before deposits become non-refundable.

  • Heat and wildfire disruption

Late summer travel in southern Europe and Marrakech can bring extreme heat, transport disruption and wildfire restrictions. Check official local advice close to travel and keep flexible cancellation terms for exposed areas.
