The rental car is collected when leaving Rome and returned before entering Florence, completely bypassing Florence's strict Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL). Florence connects directly by rail to the Ligurian coast, where early October brings mild sea temperatures and reduced crowds before the train run up to Milan Malpensa.

Early October is ideal for central and northern Italy. Summer heat has broken, walking the Forum and Florence's stone streets is comfortable, and the Ligurian Sea retains enough warmth from summer for pleasant coastal swimming.
